An Indoor Smoker Adds New Flavors to Meals

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

An indoor smoker adds new dimensions and variety to meals for family and friends. A smoker prepares meats, chili, and other dishes with very distinctive flavors. The indoor smoker uses wood chips of hickory, oak or mesquite to flavor meals. Other hard wood flavors are also available for use in a smoker, and each cook can decide exactly which flavor is best for the current meal. Some of the indoor smokers also double for cooking in the normal ways. The indoor smokers are available in different capacities.

Indoor smokers are usually versatile appliances that provide different uses. Some of the smokers can be used on a small stove top and double as a steamer as required. The indoor smokers can be used over any type of stove including gas or electric. The smokers are known for maintaining and adding special flavor to the dishes prepared. The use of an indoor smoker should keep the meats and vegetables moist and nutritious. Some people maintain that smoking foods preserves more of the nutrients than other types of cooking methods. The smoking method is supposed to prepare foods that are lower in fat and cholesterol. The indoor smoker can be used to prepare meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables.

An Indoor Smoker Prepares Flavorful Meals Quickly

Indoor smokers are easy to use, and most of these cooking tools come with detailed instruction books to help the cook. Some of the smokers can be used indoors and outdoors. There are small models that can be taken on a camping trip to be used on a small camping stove. Many of the smokers come with a variety of hard woods so the buyer can try the different flavors available. The smokers often come with recipes especially for smoking foods for the best nutritional values.

Indoor smokers are great for preparing some of the most nutritional foods available. Smoked salmon is a great treat for the family and always full of the important nutritional substances to keep the family in perfect health. Many other types of seafood known for their great nutritional value are especially tasty when smoked with a flavorful wood. Smoked turkey is great for Thanksgiving, but also for every day sandwiches and casseroles. Most of the smokers available are made so they are easy to clean and store. Many smokers come with excellent directions, but cooks will be able to show their talents with creative use of the available flavors.

The Comeback Of The Mighty Cupcake

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

When we were children, cupcakes were some of our very favorite treats. Parents took the extra special time to carefully mix, bake and decorate these miniature treats to the great appreciation of all those who were lucky enough to enjoy them. They were fun to make with the family and an evening could be care freely spent creating these tasty morsels. They were made for special birthday parties, a great report card and for any exceptional achievement or milestone. These treats were easy to make, easy and fun to eat, they were the perfect single serving, and they were easy to clean-up.

As children grew up and interests changed, jump ropes made way for nail polish and eye shadow, while “cooties” made way for asking girls out on movie dates. Things changed and such childish treats as cupcakes were abandoned for other such treats, such as a full sheet birthday or celebratory cakes.

In college and early adulthood years, it would be very rare to see them donning any social party tables. Sodas were replaced with alcoholic beverages, sweets with chips and other such snacking foods.

But, recently there has been an interesting revival of the infamously neglected cupcake within all age segments of the population. It has become popular again to want this special treat so much so that we are finding celebrities stopping, often daily, to enjoy the delectable treats. Many gossip magazines have written articles and taken voluminous pictures of this new phenomenon among celebrities. And, as is the case most of the time, celebrities tend to be the ultimate trend setters. The majority of the population looks toward celebrities for fashion tips, cool lifestyles, and many other instances. They want to, literally, be like the stars and so how better to achieve this than by imitating what they do.

These miniture cakes are now once again being appreciated by young and old for their perfect portion sizes and their fun unique variations. Would you like sprinkles, frosting, or chocolate chips on that? What color would you like the sprinkles?

They can be multi-colored, stars, beads, or one solid color. Would you like chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, or a multitude of other frosting flavors; and instead of chocolate chips to add that extra special touch, why not coconut or peanut shavings? And those choices don’t even include the different flavors available in the actual cupcake itself! Why not chocolate vanilla swirl or mocha peanut butter blend? And what about the wrapper the delightful treat sits in as it patiently waits for a person to pick it up? You can have pink, silver foil, holiday seasoned, and the list goes on of all the possible wrappers you can choose from. So many choices, so little time definitely illuminating the additional reasons why they are such a beloved treat for people young and old. And, they have a wonderful way of making people feel younger. They feel like a special treat in one’s hand, especially the uniquely decorated ones. No two are exactly alike, that is another great reason why people seem to adore them so! Cupcakes are definitely making a comeback and we are all so lucky for this fact!

Color Your Meals For Optimal Nutrition

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

As you learn more about nutrition you may find the issue of eating an appropriately balanced meal to be a bit confusing. There isn’t any, single super food that provides the body with all that it needs. Instead we need to nourish the body with balanced amounts of good, whole foods which provide a variety of nutrients and other beneficial nutritional components to promote good health.

Amazingly enough, nature was designed to give us some clues. Many fruits and vegetables are color coded to help identify the types of nutrients found within. By striving to eat a more “colorful” diet, we can better achieve a balanced intake of healthful food and benefit from better nutritional support.

Many of these colors come from antioxidants. These molecules have been shown to provide a cancer-fighting arsenal to the body as well as to potentially reverse some of the biological markers of aging when consumed regularly, and in appropriate amounts from quality sources.

The antioxidant Lycopene provides a red color to some fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes. When the tomato is vine-ripened the color of the meat inside is a very deep red indicating higher levels of Lycopene than what is found in green-harvested varieties. Lycopene has been shown to protect the DNA from free-radical attacks which reduces mutation and incidence of cancerous cell development.

An orange color indicates the presence of Carotenes which are converted to Vitamin A inside the body. Studies have shown that while chemically isolated Vitamin A supplements may exhibit liver toxicity at very low levels, carotenes derived from food have been shown to be safe even at very high dosages. Carrots are an excellent source of carotenes, but remember that cooking damages this antioxidant so raw, or lightly cooked carrots are necessary for optimal nutritional support.

Yellow is the color of Lutein and Quercitin. These nutrients are beneficial for clear vision and good health of the retina and have also been found to have anti-inflammatory properties. They are found in corn, bell peppers, apples and pears, but are also found in many green, leafy vegetables like kale and spinach.

Antocyanines are found in foods influenced by the purple color. These antioxidants are important for good blood circulation and health of the retina. Many berries are rich with this antioxidant and again they should be eaten raw for the best nutritional benefit.

Finally a scarlet color comes from foods containing the antioxidant Beta Cyanine. An excellent source of this color comes from the beet and has an anti-anemic benefit to those who include this regularly in the diet.

Adding more color to the diet can provide health benefits as well as create a more interesting menu. Colorful meals are more attractive which is probably what inspired our ancestors to add these foods to their diets in the first place. Be sure to “eat from the rainbow” and you’ll greatly improve the balance of your diet in vital nutritional support.

Get Your Morning Wakeup Call With Black Tea

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Black tea is probably the most popular form of this beverage for tea drinkers everywhere. If you have ever been a serious tea drinker or even an occasional one, chances are you have had black tea and probably did not even realize it. To many people, tea is just that, tea. However, for those regular drinkers, we know different tea has different flavors and strengths.

Black tea is the strongest and darkest type you will ever find. Have you ever heard of Lipton? Sure you have and you have probably even had a cup or two, it is black tea. However, did you wonder what makes it black? What makes it strong?

Well, you should first know that black tea does not come from a different plant than other varieties. Every type of tea you have ever seen or drank all comes from the same type of plant. However, different leaf types, the way it is harvested, and processed actually make the tea different.

There are four steps to creating black tea. First, the leaves used are spread apart and then left alone to become pliable and limp for use, which is known as withering. After this process, rolling with a machine or by hand is performed, which allows for a chemical release.

Oxidation is the third step of the process, which is almost known as fermentation, this is when leaves are exposed to air for up to four hours, in which they begin to change colors from green to a dark brown. Firing is then the last step of the process, large ovens dry the leaves out, and readies them for brewing.

That’s that, the tea is ready for its first cup. Remember, because black tea is the strongest variety, you only want to use about one teaspoon for each eight ounces of water you intend to use. Pour your boiling water into the cup and allow steeping for no more than five minutes. Any longer than five minutes will result in oversteeping, which will make the drink taste very bitter. Of course, if you accidentally find yourself with a bitter tasting drink, you can add some milk to the brew and curb some of the bitter tastes.

Just how strong is black tea? Well, let’s put it this way, if you drink eight ounces of it, there are forty milligrams of caffeine in that one cup. That is equal to that popular cup of coffee all of your friends are drinking to give them that morning boost.
