Bottled water becomes very popular nowadays. The bottled water companies may even tell you that it is the best thing that we can get. It is something we all should drink. However, you need to be clear that the companies are trying to sell you the products. They are trying to make more money and sell as much as they can, even if you do not need their products.

You may be curious if bottled water is better that tap water. The truth is that it is not! In most cases they are just the same thing. Of course it may be filtered but it does not mean that it is better than tap water. As a matter of fact drinking water is always good for your health. However, we have to admit that we are just wasting out money if we drink bottled water instead of tap water.

In order to attract consumers to buy the bottled water, sometimes other ingredients will be added to it. For example, they may add sugar to the it. Besides the filtered water, there is some bottled water that comes from a spring. You may think that it will be better tap water in this case. However, this is not true.

If you find that you like the taste of bottled water rather than that comes from the tap. You should not just go buying more bottled water if you do not want to waste money. You should try to buy some devices to filter the tap water. This will certain help to remove the unfavorable taste of it.

You may try more advanced filtering systems if you want. However, it may not be a lot better than a small filtering device. Of course some people may really need these systems because of the conditions of the tap water. For example, sometimes it is too hard and you need to soften it.

Alternatively, you may also try to put the tap water in the refrigerator. You will find that it tastes a lot better when it is cold!

To be honest, there is nothing evil about bottled water. The only problem with it is that it is too expensive. But they are just the same as tap water. To this end it is just a waste of money. Everyday, there are people who die from starvation. It will be just crazy for us to pay so much to buy these products!

Down Home BarbecuesA Summertime Tradition

Nothing says summer like a good old down home barbecue. Just the thought of one brings back fond memories of smelling burgers on the grill, chasing after lightning bugs and a great fireworks display. What would summertime be without a bag of Kingsford charcoal and some potato salad? Barbecues give everyone a reason to invite their family members and neighbors over for a day of games and activities. Some of these activities include croquet, badminton, horseshoes and maybe a not so friendly game of tag football. Whatever activities are chosen for the day, it is guaranteed that memories will be made and shared for years to come!

To make your barbecue a successful one, you should include foods that are readily available in the summertime such as fresh fruit salads. Vegetable trays are also a perfect addition when enhanced by various dips for quick munching. To keep your cold foods from spoiling (especially salads that have mayonnaise as an ingredient), it is always a good idea to keep them under cover and place their container in ice.

When planning the menu for your barbecue, be sure to have the usual fare such as hot dogs and hamburgers but also add a “not so traditional” food item into the mix. One great idea is to have chicken shish kabobs which are incredibly easy to make by cutting boneless chicken breasts into cubes and skewering them with green peppers, red peppers, whole mushrooms and fresh cut onion chunks. Grill until the juice from the chicken runs clear and there is little to no pink in the middle. Remember that the hotter the grill and faster you cook the chicken, the juicier it will be.

Another great addition to your “not so traditional” menu is grilled peaches. (This one is actually a true barbecue staple for our family.) We simply pick the peaches off of our backyard peach tree and cut them in half. Cut the peaches in half and remove the pit. Then dunk the peaches in a mix of 1/4 cup Italian dressing and 4 tbsp of honey. Grill the peaches for approximately six minutes on each side and top with a little whipped cream.

Complete your summertime barbecue menu with a sumptuous strawberry shortcake or a customary gelatin mold filled with fresh melon. Most of all, whatever you do… relax and enjoy the lazy days of summer with your friends and family.

Coffee Pod Machines and How to Choose Them

The tasting of coffee is such a maddening experience that the coffee lovers can be said to be the addicts of it. The working of coffee pod machines lies between that of drip machines and an espresso machine. Like the drip machine, water is heated in boiler compartment of the pod machine and passed through the coffee grounds. How Do Chef Schools Work

Culinary schools give aspiring chefs their best shot at making it to the big time, especially those accredited by the American Culinary Federation. Just like any other profession, many of the better hospitality establishments base their hiring practices not only upon the length of education the applicant provides, but also where that education was obtained.

Tuition runs the gamut from relatively inexpensive courses offered by local community colleges all the way to the Culinary Institute of America’s breathtaking $40,000 price tag. And what doesn’t tuition cover? Oh, just uniforms, textbooks, cutlery, and other necessary kitchen equipment.

Curricula differ somewhat from school to school, but most of the culinary student’s time is consumed in learning the ins and outs of cooking by actually doing it under close supervision. Participants not only prepare food, but also learn how to plan menus, minimize food costs, buy food and supplies in quantities, and how to appropriately choose and store food. Learning proper hygiene and local public health rules also play a large part in a culinary student’s education.

Classes are sometimes offered all day, taking a complete eight hours, while at some schools, classes are broken into morning and afternoon sessions.

There are usually lectures, and then demonstrations followed by hands-on practice time with students applying the techniques demonstrated earlier. Some schools even offer part-time professional classes to accommodate working cooks wanting to increase their formal education.

A number of educational scholarships are available, among them:
The American Academy of Chefs Chair’s Scholarship Ten $1,000 scholarships awarded each year
The American Academy of Chefs Chaine des Rotisseurs Scholarship Twenty $1,000 scholarships awarded annually
National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) Three yearly $2,000 scholarships for high school seniors and undergraduate students
Because years of training and experience are needed to reach the level of executive chef in most well-paying restaurants, many students serious about this profession begin their training in high school through vocational programs, then go on to a two- or four-year college or university.

Apprenticeship programs offer more training afterward, and these come from individual eating establishments and are given by a personal mentor or from professional institutions and associations such as the American Culinary Federation.
Apprenticeship lasts usually about three years and is most often known as the years of “grunt work” doing all the chopping, grating, peeling, slicing, and washing necessary to prepare the ingredients for the chefs. Even cleaning appliances, sweeping and mopping floors, and other seemingly unaffiliated “chef” work gets done by the apprentice as part of his or her learning experience. Often this “trial-by-fire” period separates the truly dedicated chefs-to-be from those who are merely good cooks.

It is not impossible to attain the status of executive chef without the benefit of formal education, but in today’s job market, most establishments (especially the finer hotels and restaurants) now require some type of certification to work in this capacity.

Like a degree of any sort, formal training in the culinary arts may not mean you are another Julia Child or Paul Prudhomme, but it does at least signify that you’ve got what it takes to get through the school. So stop trying to think of ways to take shortcuts, get your tuition together, and go learn what you need to attain your dream!

What is Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is the tea that you are used to being served in traditional Chinese restaurants. It is made from a type of leaf that is half way between green and black teas. This tea is almost always brewed to be very strong in taste. It gives the tea drinker an aftertaste that will remind them of something sweet. Some people say it is more like green tea but without the vegetable taste, while others say it is far removed from the fragrant odor that can be counted on with black teas. The truth is that oolong tea, when properly prepared, has an aroma and taste that sets it apart from both green tea and black tea.

When teas are categorized they are broken down into the classifications; odor, taste and aftertaste. Oolong tea, because of the process of roasting the leaves removes most of the odor. This process appears to diminish any potentially sour aftertaste. Many people feel that this process of roasting makes the tea easier on a person’s stomach. Like the white teas this one should not be prepared in boiling water and should steep no more than a few minutes. Perhaps one of the most common mistakes that people make when preparing oolong tea at home is they allow it to steep far too long, resulting in a bitter aftertaste. The easiest way to prepare the tea properly is to boil the water then let it cool to about one hundred and eighty five degrees and then make the tea, setting a timer so that the steeping time does not exceed three to five minutes at the most. Many people feel that if it is made in boiling water than it will lose its flavor.

There are at many different kinds of this tea grown in China. The most popular, and most prized, is the Big Red Robe brand. The Yellow Rose has a flowery flavor while the Golden Buddha, a relatively new addition to these Oolong teas, has a strangely light taste. The color of this tea is somewhere between a deep cherry red and a pale nearly pink color. The lower quality teas are closer to black in color and may have a somewhat bitter taste. Those who believe that Oolong tea is good for your health suggest at least four, and up to ten is better, cups per day. They claim that this will increase a feeling of well being and improve the body’s energy levels.

History Of Coffee

Whatever be the reason as to why people drink coffee, it is undoubtedly the most famous drink consumed today.

As far as Americans are concerned, coffee is a merely three hundred years old. In other places and cultures it has been a widespread phenomena for a much longer time. There are records indicating the use of coffee as early as 800 B. C. In fact, Homer speaks of a bitter black beverage that has powers of stimulation and for all we know Homer might have been speaking of coffee.

In the year 1000 A.D., coffee was mostly used for medicinal purposes. It has been reported than in 1400 a Yemeni goat herder saw his flock eating some reddish berries and consequently becoming excited and restless. When this goat herder told a monk about this they gathered the berries together and boiled them in water. They found that the resulting beverage could get rid of sleep and weariness.

The first coffee plant was started in Africa, in the Ethiopian region known as Kaffa. It then spread to Egypt, Yemen, and Arabia, and by this time had become part of everyday life.

By the late 1500s coffee was already being sold in Europe as any other commodity. But the shipping taxes were too high and the demand for coffee was also rising. This resulting in many people experimenting with the cultivation of coffee in other countries. Somewhere around 1727 coffee was grown for the first time in Brazil.

In 1903, Ludwig Roselius, a German coffee importer delivered a batch of damaged coffee beans to researchers. The researchers in turn discovered how to take the caffeine out of the beans without losing any flavor. Thus, decaffeinated coffee found its way into the market and was so distributed in the 1920s.

Instant coffee is basically soluble coffee powder that does not require the long preparation process involved with whole grain coffee. It was mass produced using the invention of George Constant Washington. He was an English chemist who was living in Guatemala at the time. One day, he was waiting for his wife to join him when he saw that there was a find powder deposited on the spout of his silver coffee urn. He presumed that this was condensation from coffee vapor and experimentation led to the invention of instant coffee.

In 1906 Washington started experiments that led to the introduction of his Red ECoffee in 1909.

In 1938, Nestle created freeze-dried coffee in order to help Brazil with a surplus in coffee production.

Nescafe was first introduced into Switzerland and by 1956 coffee was everywhere.

Every year, 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed in the United States. Coffee has become one of the largest commodities and is second only to oil.

Animal Products Used In Alcohols

The use of animal derived products in alcohol production is considerably more widespread than most would imagine. Anti-foaming agents, colourants and clarifying processes all make use of animal products in some way or another.

It is not as if there are no real alternatives because there are. The problem lies in the poor information available to consumers and so no demand for a change is well established. One of the main reasons for this quite simply is a clause in the 1984 UK Food Labelling Regulations, which does not require any beverages with an alcoholic content higher than 1.2 percent to display its ingredients on the packaging.

Fining is the process by which certain impurities held in suspension, such as excess yeast, are removed from ale and other alcohols. To remove these impurities something must be added to the liquid to cause unwanted particles to precipitate.

Alternative non-animal additives used in the fining process are bentonite, kaolin, kieselguhr and silica gel. Modern methods such as centrifuging and filtering are also becoming more common.

A large number of breweries employ a substance called isinglass during the fining processes of virtually all cask ales. Isinglass is a kind of gelatin obtained from the swim bladders of certain fish, especially the Chinese sturgeon.

If cloudy particles show up in a pint of real ale when held up to the light, it is a sure sign that it had been recently disturbed, was brewed in a cask and more likely than not contains isinglass.

Occasionally the additive glyceryl monostearate is used instead of 900 dimethylpolysiloxane as anti-foaming an agent in the production of beers produced in kegs. Sometimes glyceryl monostearate is derived from animals

Most of the main cider brands are fined in a similar fashion but use gelatine instead of isinglass.

Wine is fined using a variety of different animal derivatives, isinglass, gelatin, egg albumen, modified casein and chitin (which comes from crab or lobster shells). Some manufacturers even use ox blood though that is generally considered an antiquated technique nowadays.

Fortified wines like ports and sherries should be treated similarly to wine. Port also uses gelatin during its fining process.

In addition to using isinglass in its production, red wine also contains E120. The red colourant, E120 is produced from the pregnant body of the cochineal insect (Dactilopius Coccus). Campari and some soft drinks also use the cochineal insect for red colouring.

Most malt whiskies, blended whiskies and Spanish brandies are conditioned in casks, which previously held sherry, which in turn may have been treated with animal derived finings.

Some imported vodkas may have been passed through a bone charcoal filter.

A number of these animal products leave only tiny amounts in the final product and a few of them do use other non-animal alternatives, but the fact remains that without a change in the UK Food Labelling Regulations, vegetarians and anybody else who cares to know the contents of what they are consuming are largely kept in the dark.
